Fire Rated Mezzanine Floors

In most instances mezzanine floor fire protection is not required if the platform is to be used for storage only, provided it meets certain criteria. The floor must not be more than 20 metres in any one direction, must be less than 400 sq metres in total, and must not be more than 50% of the building’s floor area into which it is being fitted. When used for offices, product production, retail areas, or where staff are continuously operating, fire protection for mezzanine floors will be required.

The size of your mezzanine platform, and what it will be used for, will determine whether the structure requires 60 minute fire protection, or 90 minute fire protection. Even though you propose to use an area purely for storage, if the operation requires the presence of a permanent storeman, fire protection will almost definitely be required.
